“Go away.” Sam jingled her keys in her hand as she walked to her car. “I told you to get lost, asshole. It’s over.”
In hot pursuit, Asshole tried to keep up. “Come on, baby. I said I was sorry.”
Seeing her car, Sam increased her pace. “I know what you said, but I said it’s over.”
I’ve got to get away from this guy.
“What, is this about . . . her? Come on.” He grabbed her arm, stopping her. “That’s it? You’re not even going to fight for me? You’re just going to walk away from what we have?”
“First, I don’t fight over men.” She yanked her arm free and walked double time to her car. “If a guy wants to stick his dick in someone else, he can just stay there. And second, we have shit. We have a closet. Sorry if I’m not interested in sticking around and ruining my career for shit.”
He scoffed. “You really think you’d lose your job over this? You’re one of the best CRNA’s in the city. It’s not like you can’t get another job.”
She clenched her jaw so hard, she thought she’d crack a tooth. “You know, the ironic part about this is you won’t lose your job. You’ll get a slap on the wrist and then a pat on the back by your colleagues for, how did you put it, a hot piece of ass like me.”
“You are a hot piece of ass.” He reached for her and she pushed him away. “Come on. That’s only if we get caught. We won’t get caught.”
Pressing the car alarm off, Sam opened her door. “Oh, it’s been made very clear that situations like this won’t be tolerated and if we keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll absolutely get caught.”
“Come on, baby. Don’t make a scene.” He ran his hand up her arm. “We’ve got a great thing going here. Why are you trying to screw it up?”
She felt dirty, ashamed, and had to fight to keep from visually recoiling. How had this gotten so out of hand? What in the world did I think would happen?
“I’m trying to screw it up? It is a total screw–up. A total, colossal cluster.” Her voice echoed through the parking garage as she poked him in the chest with her finger. “And let me add, when you let this situation start, you weren’t real forthcoming with your history.”
“You really think you can leave me? Leave all this?” He cupped his groin. “You know you can’t.”
Swallowing hard, she crossed her arms over her chest. “I can.”
Leaning in, he gave her a sly grin as he played with a lock of her hair. “You’ll be back. You always are.”
Pivoting on her heels, she got in her car and drove away. This time, I hope not.
